Internet marketers have some specific things we need from web hosts. Not just any host will do. To decide which web host is the right one for you, you have to think about things like how much you know about the technical aspects of the Internet. Also, you'll want to consider how many domains you can host at the site, and how big the company is.
Let's talk about all of these so you can be prepared to choose the right web host.
What Do You Know About IT?
IT, or information technology, is roughly the discipline of using computers to do business and communicate. Are you an IT expert? Comfortable around computers and computer systems? Competent with the main software products like Microsoft Word? Or just barely able to check your email?
Computer expertise runs the gamut from complete ignorance to expert. Where do you stand?
What's so great about Internet marketing is you do not have to be a super-geek to do as well as anyone else. There are big time internet marketing gurus who can barely turn on a computer. There are also others who are complete masters of several programming languages and operating systems.
You need to choose a web host who complements your level of knowledge.
Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle of all of this. I'm competent technically, but it's not my favorite thing. For me, computers and the Internet are a means to an end-that end being furthering my online businesses.
The web host I use is completely comfortable with people like me. Every now and then I want to do something that can't be done, or that I don't know how to do. My web host is very good about patiently answering my emails-not all are. I wish I could tell you who my web host is, but that would make this a press release, not an article.
How Many Domains Can You Have?
The web host I use allows me to host unlimited domains on one account. That's very important to me as an internet entrepreneur, because I like to try things and see if they work out.
I need the flexibility of having an idea for a site, doing a little market research, then grabbing a WordPress blog and getting the site up and rolling quickly. If I had to be buying new accounts every time I tried something, it would definitely cramp my creativity.
Are the Servers Going to Crash?
Not all the time, but every once in a while I do something brilliant and create a tidal wave of traffic to one of my sites. The host I use is completely set up to handle sudden changes in traffic. Some are not! The last thing you want is to do everything brilliantly and have your web host torpedo your efforts.
There are a ton of other things you need to think about when you decide on a web host, but these are three that really stand out in my mind. Don't judge by price alone. There are many low priced hosts out there, some good, some bad.
Bottom line, ask questions. Call them up if you want before you whip out the old credit card. If they won't answer simple questions on the phone, I would move on to someone else.
